30 Day Challenge....not going to plan

Wow, looooong day. Today I finished work on two murals that has me totally and utterly drained. Yesterday I just couldn't get into it. Needless to say there's been no progress in 72 hours on the 30 Day challenge. However that being said I will NOT GIVE UP. So consider that a mini hiatus that will resume tomorrow pending my back isn't hurting too much to sit up. I'll be sure to post some pictures at the very least of the new mural. However if you want to have a peek before I get to it, head on over to my Facebook Page and check it out via the new album. 30 Day Challenge, Day 8: Favorite Animated Character

Well Day 8's drawing was a blast form the past....favorite animated character. This one got it's start from comics however has been animated in both 2D and 3D. I credit Garfield for my start in drawing....from the time my mom drew a poster of him from me, he's always held a warm fuzzy spot. I don't draw him anymore, actually this was the first time in years, but definitely fun to revisit something classic!

30 Day Challenge continues....back log of Day 6 and 7

Well I've been drawing daily, but very backlogged regarding posting. Sorry for the oversight folks, life while simple, has been keeping me very occupied. Tonight I'll be posting both days 6 and 7. Day Six was to draw my favourite character from a novel, not one in a movie. Well I've decided to bend those rules slightly, let's call it "artistic license" and decided to go with my favourite although it has been converted to a movie. That character would be Gandalf of Lord of the Rings. That wizard gets himself out of the tightest of binds, always lands on his feet and just won't die! His fight for the greater good and the mystery he's shrouded in make him the ultimate mythic Houdini....well, I've outed my inner geek now haven't I? Oh well, I'm proud of it! I'm not entirely sure what part of the book this sketch comes from but I was thinking of him as Gandalf the Grey around the time of the Mines of Moria.....

Day 7, very very simple : Favorite Word.....well call it my inner Flower Child, but it's Love hands down....without that word, there is no hope for humanity in general. I'm not much for word art but this will do.

Another Mural! The light house Part 1

Another Mural has been started! These are so different than the canvas and paper pieces I do but I love the variety. This time around I'm painting in another tight space (see Mural Is Completed) and this one will be two opposite walls. This one is of a basic lighthouse, so far a lot has been done in only one day, but still a lot of work left to do. Unfortunately I forgot to bring blue to the site.....who would forget blue for a waterscape? Thankfully even if I had it I ran out of time for the day so you'll have to follow along to see the completed piece in any case. I hope you enjoy the progress so far as much as those it's been created for......

This is the before....the blank wall all sketched out for the first brush strokes.

Initial colour of the Light House have been blocked in, now it's time to dry the first coat.

Finally the first day is complete, shadowing in for a more 3D look to the column, some clouds and a bit of sun. Next up will be a wash for the sky and the waterline of course. Hopefully this will be complete in the coming week. After this, there's an opposite wall that will be transformed into a mini waterfall. Stay tuned, and thank you for following!

30 Day Challenge, Day 5.....My Best Friend....

As sappy and sentimental as it sounds though my husband Rob is my closest. We were friends before we were dating many many many years ago, and he's closest to my heart......

Oops! Missed a day, however better late then never and you know what I'm glad. Why? Well today I went out and treated myself to a birthday present, art markers! Dual sided with a brush tip....LOVE IT! Why oh why don't I try my more child like mediums more often? They're not paints, but for sketching....I'm in love. Well without further ado may I present Day 4 of the 30 day challenge: My Favorite Place. Although I have many many many places that have made me feel at peace by far the most favourite would be anywhere I can camp. Camping is by far the most enriching past time and the place that sparks my most passionate creative streaks.

30 Day Challenge, Day 3

Well this one was very odd for me....yesterday I had to draw my favourite food. Not only does that in itself seem like a challenge (drawing food and food alone???) but to make it interesting. I'm not too sure I made it interesting but I pushed though and did it. The next hardest part about it? Well which food to pick. I love food as a whole but the object was to find one....chocolate was a close second....but I do have to concede Pasta is by far my favourite food (especially littered with seafood).

Day 2.....Your Favorite Animal. That one took some thought. I have a love for animals so picking just one is hard....but I'd have to say a sleeping/content cat has got to be one of the most serene sights apart form our own children.

Happy New Year everyone, I hope your Christmas/Holiday and New Years was a great one. I normally don't do New Years resolutions however as 2011 was such a train wreck for me I thought it wouldn't hurt to try it in 2012. My personal resolution is to take One Day at a Time. I am a constant worry wart and create a lot of anxiety and distress for myself as a result. Focusing on what can be done that one day takes a lot of pressure of yourself. Seems simple right? Reflect back, how often do we actually practise this? I don't think you'll find that you do it as often as you think you do.....and you're not alone. So in the spirit of taking it one day at a time, I present my own personal 30 day challenge inspired by a website stumbled upon. Yesterday was Day One and that challenge was to draw a picture of yourself. I personally hate drawing self portraits, psyco analyze that as much as you'd like hahaha. In any case I mustered up the courage and did it! Pardon the quality however this one was taken courtesy of my camera on my phone....

Well I've been finding that the creative process is failing me badly on the canvas....sales on Etsy are non-existent so it's time to take things back to basics. By this I mean doing art for the sake of art. Between my full time job that pays the bills and my children I've had little to no time to self promote. This by no means is a complaint...I'm able to pay the bills and my children are happy and this is by far the top priorities at this time. This being said though I ache to draw or paint something so what better way than to sketch! My goal is to use these sketches/doodling for inspiration. It's odd how something so simple and basic is something I never ever do. All artists do it, but for some reason I keep trying to skip over this process. Hopefully by embracing it I'll get some creative mojo going. So please, I encourage everyone to post comments when I post the sketches/doodles, I would LOVE to know if something I do just for the sake of doing it is appealing.....it may be my next finished piece.

A Productive Evening.....

Wow! What a creative rush! I had an incredible time tonight, so creative and inspiring. I'm not sure where the inspiration came from, not one bit. But I'm happy I ran with it. I'm so pleased because I don't usually do many mixed media pieces and this one turned out so true to what I had pictured in my mind. This piece is still not titled but is I'm very happy with it....hopefully I'll have it listed within my Etsy store over the next few days and will be sure to list the link. I'm rather pleased, the combination of watercolour paints, charcoal pencil, pan pastels and acid free pen complimented each other even better than I had hoped :)

It's definitely not my creates piece.....nor my most complicated, but overall I'm just happy to let a complete piece out of the jumbled creative mess my brain has been lately. The break in the creative block is welcome and hopefully will be the first of many new pieces......

Today marks my first day experimenting with Pan pastels.....I'm not happy at all with this....not one bit. It's amazing how quickly you forget to use a medium when you ignore it for so long. I think I do remember why I wasn't too much of a fan of pastels now that I've picked them up again. This being said though I don't plan on giving up on them. One thing I'm realizing this time around is that I need to re-learn what I expect of them. For example, one key fact is that I shouldn't man handle the paper prior to using the pastels. I forgot the oils on my skin would pre-mark the paper, showing themselves as I run the pastel over them. I'll have to commit to learning how to use these materials a little more effectively and get more attractive results out of them. My impression of this first play sketch is how much it resembles my childhood art.

They are incredibly expensive too. This little set wasn't too bad though and a great steal (thank you Curry's!!!) although the individual pieces I'll need to get (notice there's no white or black?) are a little intimidating at six bucks per canister.

What I do like about them is how easily they glide across the paper, so much more control in this format over the traditional pastel stick. The colours are so incredibly vibrant and I have a feeling will pop a lot more once I get over being shy in the application of them on the paper.

I look forward to showing further experimentations using these pastels, hopefully along the way I'll create some unique pieces I'll actually list in my shop.

Under the Willow Tree

Under the Willow Tree is a painting just finished using watercolour paint and ink. It's 4x6 inches in size and features a silhouette of a girl among fairies under the moon and willow tree. Lately I've just been fascinated with the ink on watercolour look and love how this one has turned out......

Well folks it's time I stop treating this art as a hobby and jump back in both feet running. Today I have ended my long silence over on Etsy. I have re-listed a few pieces I've had on the site before and will be adding to the inventory a few pieces at a time. Sunny Whimsy

The only thing to do after the Moonlit Whimsy is naturally the polar opposite. I've taken the darker piece and made a little bit of a happier version (although my personal favorite is still the original). I really like how happy this piece makes me feel though, it definitely has it's own appeal. I have a few other ideas for this style of painting I plan on doing after this......most likely something water related. I have visions of surf and sun in my mind. Maybe some wishful thinking to get the summer started?

Today I scaled it down significantly from my last project! I'm not too sure what brought this image to mind but it fell into place rapidly. Started early this morning and finished shortly after the kids were put to bed tonight, definitely probably a piece has been finished quite so quickly....well at least at this size. The final piece is 8 x 10 inches and painted with Acrylic. I've titled it Moonlit Whimsy. Something about it makes me smile despite the grayed out colours.....this is definitely one of my favorites. I'm still rather undecided about what I'll do with this piece however felt it would be a great place to start by displaying it here......

Well it's done. Completely done and came together a LOT faster than I had originally anticipated. Some pieces are like that for me and click together incredibly fast. I love how sometimes simple works better than my more detailed pieces. As always I'm very undecided how I feel about this piece but I am happy with it as is. There's a few things I would have done differently but as is it works and there's no plans to do any further changes.

With no further delay here are some pictures of the completed piece where it's now on display.......in my living room!

C'est Fini!......Well almost!

Wow, what a rush....today I got on a roll and I'm almost there! The canvas is painted and signed, all that is left is the edges of the canvas to be prettied up and then drying time of course. Three hours of constant painting.....a very rare thing for me for which I have to thank my wonderful husband who left me home by myself for some quality creating time! Once the edging is done and the paint is completely set I will do the final update on the piece (still un-named).

Well there's been a rather large amount of progress on the piece in the last few days. I had meant to wait until this weekend but seeing as how half the fun is getting the larger pieces mucked in I couldn't resist! Finer detail still has yet to be done but I'm enjoying this phase. Hopefully I'll get the lower half finished this weekend and start on the middle. Stay tuned for further updates and thank you for following!

A rather large work in progress......

Today I have decided to start what is definitely my largest piece on canvas yet. I've been intending on creating a new piece for my living room since the idea was given once we had painted the room at the end of the summer last year. I'll be blogging regarding the progress the entire way and hopefully at the end I'll have a piece I'll actually want to hang up. Any one who knows me knows that I'm incredibly hard on myself and while I have sold a few pieces......I still have a hard time displaying it where others will see it in my own home. completely irrational I'm sure, but an artist is ultimately their own harshest critic.

That aside, today not much progress has been made apart from deciding the actual design of the piece and blocking it in on the canvas itself. The total size is 24 x 28 inches and as of yet won't be framed however the edging will be painted a darker chocolate brown to match the accents in the room in which it will be hung. I'm looking forward to what this will turn into and I'm very hopeful it won't be overly difficult. My aim is to keep it simple so as not too stick out too much in a room that's already pretty bold.

Falling Contrast

I'm really starting to enjoy the larger canvas in the last few months, and this piece is definitely one that I enjoyed doing purely due to the way the size of the work space contributes to the effect. With autumn being upon us, I am fortunate to see some incredibly GORGEOUS sights as I drive along my local roads. The colours have changed and I find myself surrounded by the most bold and vibrant colours amongst the empty harvested corn fields and the growing fall crops. As I was driving I struggled with this image I wanted to capture in paint and have been itching to get it out.

From this came this painting, hopefully I've managed to capture it in a way that appeals to more than just me.....however I am very happy with it regardless. There's something about fall foliage that brightens my day and captures my attention. This piece will be staying with me......however I am working on an idea to release some affordable prints in my etsy shop in the upcoming weeks.

Little Blue Jay

Done, finally. Up until three days ago it was only the tree, done but looking unfinished. Then along came an idea to paint the little bird after staring at a faux flower arrangement I have. As I said in my previous post my daughter has fallen in love with it so it's become a gift to her; it'll be sad to have it leave my office. While the spring and summer are gone, this piece really brings you right back into it!

Tonight my kids made me cry......and it was a good reason. Today I finally put the finishing touches on my latest painting.....little Blue Jay. The piece is currently drying in my office/studio. As we're getting ready for bed I enter the room to see my husband and kids viewing the finished piece and talking about it, may daughter admiring it more than the other two. My husband looks at me and starts to attempt to discreetly point towards my daughter as if to ask if I could give it to her. After thinking about it a moment I agreed which was immediately followed by my son asking for my other piece reaching (boys and fire.....who knew?).

Well I've now gifted them.....and while I'm sad to give away the canvas I've been staring at for the past few weeks, I'm glad I could make their day. What really got me was when my daughter looked at me quite seriously and said "Mommy, I have two dollars I can give you for this so it's almost like selling it in a real shop"; which was followed by my little guy offering his two dollars. No money was exchanged, but did I ever hold those two in a hug that seemed to be the longest moment in history.

I love my kids!

Reaching

Long time no update........this year has been a pretty bland artistic one for me so far. My site unfortunately is still not operational and not much time has been given to creative whims. Well until a month ago that is. I have finally given myself a shake and picked up my paint brushes again. My wonderful husband gifted me with a new easel and some canvases for our anniversary and the spark has lit up again to paint. There's always something about new "tools" that get the creative juices flowing again. Since my daughter's mural I haven't really painted much up until this piece and another one is being worked on as recently as today.

*side note: Leigh's mural is complete and new pictures will be posted for the completed piece. I've also started work on a mural for my son which I will start posting about in the next week or two once all the back to school excitement has completely died down

Reaching is a larger piece, 16 x 20 inches to be exact and is painted with acrylic over stretched canvas. I was able to play with some additive that gives it the consistency and drying time of oils and managed some interesting overlapping effects with it. Thanks for looking and continuing to follow. Leigh's Garden continued......

Well I've gotten two more days work into the mural.....I meant to post pictures after the grass was added almost a week ago however put the room back together before I remembered to take the pictures. Oh well, I've managed to get another day's work in as I was home with my son who has an ear infection. Not good to miss work, but a mom's gotta do what a mom's gotta do. That aside the progress ended up being a nice little surprise for my daughter when she came home today, so I'm happy! So, without any further delay, here's the pictures of the progress......

Leigh's Garden

With my daughter's seventh birthday soon upon us I've decided to start my project/birthday present for her. This year I'm painting her a mural of her own for her space. I promised myself when we finally bought our own home that both children would have their own personalized room so my daughter and I thought long and hard and she decided upon a garden for her room complete with a sunny sky, flowers and butterflies. I was going to wait until later in the year but the recent good weather we've had has inspired me to start a little earlier, plus my daughter's face when she saw me take the paint brush to her walls ignited the urge to get going even more. What better motivation than an excited happy little girl urging you on. So with that I will leave you all with pictures of my first leg of the journey and will be sure to keep you all posted as the mural progresses.......oh and the blue of the closer shot of the sun is the truer colour. My camera seems to be quitting on me sadly. Thanks for looking/reading!

Musical Mural Day 3, completion!

Well the 3rd and final day is now complete. I have now finished the mural and as I type this one little girl is very happy with the results......and by that I mean the little girl who is now the proud owner of her new mural. I absolutely love it when I see the faces of those I paint for when they see the finished product. It's an exciting moment and completely nerve wrecking at the same time as you wait to see that what you've done is to their satisfaction. Today seemed to just fly past and everything fell into place beautifully. So, for your consideration I now show you the final installment for this Musical Mural.......

Musical Mural Day 2

Oh what a day! Today I put in an extra hour and a half into the work however it really did pay off. The one main wall is now sealed and the details are being worked into the remaining areas. I have even gotten started on the name which I'm really looking forward to seeing completed as it was one of my favorite to sketch out. The colours are just popping off the wall and it's pulling together nicely. With any luck only one more good day of work will be needed and then it can be enjoyed! Musical Mural Day 1

Today I had the pleasure of starting another mural centering around music and I'm very happy with the results so far. Being just one day in to the project quite a bit has been pieced in but there's still a good bit to go yet. I would post the concept drawing but I'd rather wait until the entire piece is finished. I'm enjoying this piece particularly as I'm quite fond of music myself so to use that as the theme for this mural has been a treat.

Here is the progress so far:

I still have yet to finish outlining the lines (my mind's too tired to think of the proper term for them) and to add the details around the trail of notes. Tomorrow I will be accenting with flowers and "twinkling" and moving on to the opposite wall which I am really eager to start. With any luck one more good day will have the piece complete.

This piece has truly been a of fun, and I'm looking forward to getting another day to work on it tomorrow. I'll be sure to update with the next day's progress tomorrow evening. Thanks for looking!

Inked Sunset

Today I attempted a poured watercolour effect and have learned two essential things. Watercolour canvases should be used for watercolour painting. If not for any other reason, but for how much more vivid the colours could have been with a lot less paint used. The other thing is that I need to get myself some blending fluid. Overall I'm happy with the piece but it is nowhere near what I had originally envisioned for it. Not brush strokes were to have been needed for the sunset.....however I grew impatient as it wasn't working the way demonstrated and I just had to dip the brush in.

That all aside though I am very happy with it. I've listed it in my Etsy shop HERE to my husband's dismay and the free shipping still applies. I hope you like this piece and hopefully I'll try the poured watercolour technique again......this time with the proper materials though!

Moonlit Pitch

Well last night I decided to just go with it and this little piece is what crept out. The piece is rather larger than most I create (16 x 20 inches) however I was rather happy with the amount of freedom that kind of scale affords. I still like the smaller scale however this was a nice departure from the norm for me. It's also a good deal darker than I normally attempt, but again I still like it. I find myself looking for more to do with it, however it feels complete to me, so I'll leave it where it is.

Well I've finally created a few new pieces, although they are pretty similar I like that each has it's own effect with the chosen wash. They are titled Smokey Blue and Smokey Green. These pieces have been brewing in my mind for the past week and I finally decided to ignore my household duties (ie scrubbing the floor and folding laundry) and throw myself into a much needed creative spurt. Work In Progress.....Part 4, the conclusion

Well, the piece is finally finished. Not much more was done to it today other than the addition of some yellow ochre and a little highlighting with organge. I'm very happy with it and glad that I finally got around to completing the piece. It will probably be a while before I endeavor to use oils again as I usually like to work at a much faster pace, but I've enjoyed the experience.

I've also settled on a title for the piece, "Brilliant Autumn" and will be listing it in my shop on Etsy once the paint has completely dried through. Hopefully it won't take too long, however realistically will take about a week as I was a little heavy with the paint.

Work In Progress part 3

Today I feel rather productive. This morning I went out for some fall fun with my two kids and had a blast making leaf piles and then destroying them. Yeah, leaves make great mulch and act as nature's compost.....but who can resist raking them up and then immediately jumping in???? Well, we couldn't and as a result the motivation to start working on my latest painting was renewed.

Today I managed to get a lot done and had a hard time putting the brush down. I've completed all I can for now though and will have to wait for this layer of paint to dry before moving on to lighter leaves. As always, the slow drying time of the oil paints can be a bit of a bother forcing me to leave longer amounts of time between sittings than I would like, but it's paying off and I can honestly say that I'm happy with the progress. Believe it or not, the initial blocked in orange of the leaves is still a little wet!

Well tonight I attempted to continue work on my fall foliage piece.......and I am now completely reminded as to why I am not fond of oil paints as a medium. People who know me can confirm that patience is not really one of my strong suits and oil painting is definitely something that requires patience. With watercolours and acrylics the process is much for final and you have to work quickly. Oils are very forgiving and will stay wet for days at a time. They blend beautifully and their colours are so very vibrant.

Last night I was unable to work on the piece as the blocked in foliage and the sky were still very wet and any brush strokes I made were blending the surroundings in. So, I shelved it thinking I could pick it up tonight and continue on with little difficulty.

I was wrong. Although I was wrong though I did manage to get the trunk and thicker branches blocked in and some shading worked into the trunk. While I'm getting frustrated at how little I was able to accomplish I am satisfied with what was laid onto the canvas. I will have to adapt my thinking on this piece and the speed I was hoping to finish it....if not anything else it will be a lesson for myself.....and one I am looking forward to seeing through until this painting's completion. Once the sky and leaves completely dry I will go back in to paint in the finer branches.

Work In Progress......part 1

Well, for the first time in over two months I have managed to grab a paintbrush with the intention to paint.....a picture. That alone isn't the only thing that has made me feel successful tonight. This also marked the first time I've attempted a piece using oil paints in at least a year and a half if not in almost two years.

Oils are great....fantastic......however I find them very hard at times to work with and requiring a LOT of patience. Patience is not one of my stronger qualities, so that said I tend to gravitate more towards watercolours and acrylics.

I am very often taken by the strong and powerful colours that autumn brings, making it a very popular subject for me. Right now this is only the first sitting with this piece and I can only hope that I keep up the momentum. I'm hoping that by keeping up with updates regarding the piece as it progresses I'll be more motivated to keep up the momentum and see this one through to completion.

Keep your fingers crossed for me.........

It seems that my latest addition to the webpage has gotten the wheels turning in my head. Well, that and having finally set up my office/studio/guest room after having moved in almost two months ago. I'm finding my head is swelling with ideas and what seems to be the start of inspiration. While I've gotten everything out of the boxes, I still have to get the studio part of it finished. I'm finding that displaying a bit of my own work is helping.....along with the new page added to my site page at logansmeadow.com displaying work I did earlier this year. My hope is to start marketing myself and getting my name out there. I need to pick my paintbrush back up and stop making excuses why things won't work.

As an artist we can be our own worst critic, and worse still, we can be our own worst source of procrastination too.........I'm hoping to snap out of it soon.

Keep your eyes peeled.......hopefully this feeling of inspiration will produce something that will work for me.

Colourful Overlap and Dawn Creeps

Well, finally something new from this recently silent artist! I haven't really had much time to sit and create much of anything lately, however this past week I was able to channel enough inspiration to come up with my two latest pieces.

The first I've called Colour Overlap (list on Etsy HERE) and was created using watercolour pencils and ink on watercolour paper. This one started out as a neat little doodle that built itself up into it's own painting. It was a lot of fun and I do wish these kind of pieces would pop into my mind more often.

The next piece I've title Dawn Creeps (listed in my Etsy Shop HERE). This one was inspired purely by purchasing the ink! The rest really just popped into my head as I picked up the brush. A much more spontaneous piece, I am very pleased as to how this one turned out. I love contrast and this piece is one that has really grown on me. I'm hoping that this will be one of a few that I get out of my system in the next couple of weeks.

In The Spotlight

Last Friday my husband, a few friends and myself went to see a local band in concert. I bought the tickets as soon as they went on sale and was extremely excited to get to see them in person. The headlining band was Ubiquitous Synergy Seeker, a newer very local band to me that has been the soundtrack to much of my digital creations lately. The music is upbeat and very inspiring! Well at least to me anyway ;)

One of the opening acts was a band by the name of Crooked X. This group I had never heard of before and looked quite young (they are actually.....I googled the band for their myspace page). Their style was more Rock than USS, however we enjoyed them a lot! I have very varied tastes and I absolutely loved the sound.

In The Spotlight was inspired by a picture I took while in the crowd surrounding the stage. While the shot was blurry and you couldn't tell who was who I really enjoyed the positioning and the lighting......and so I created this. I will more than likely be exploring these pictures more in the coming weeks so hopefully I'll have a few other pieces to show.

And I'm feeling great about it! This has been one amazing opportunity and experience to work with such a large canvas and creating a piece that will be enjoyed by people who matter to me. I just can't wait for the kids to see this for themselves and I'm looking forward to seeing their reaction first hand next weekend. Below are the pictures of the final work. All that is needed is the protective finish and it's done. While the pictures are pretty good representations of this piece, the in person view is just incredible. I'm most thankful for the spark that was lit through painting this. I have for far too long put my brushes aside and it was rewarding to pick them up again. I'm hoping to get the opportunity to do this again soon. And if I do.....I'll be sure to post it here.

Well another long but very satisfying day. I have managed to complete a lot and very much like last time am very very very sore. But this was definitely worth it! Now I shall leave you with the pictures of today's progress. One more solid day and this should be finished.......

Well today I have started a way of painting that is very new to me. Today I started painting a mural which will be enjoyed by some very special kids in my life. This morning I set out, supplies in hand, to start my very first piece of "3D art". While now I am extremely sore to the point that typing this is difficult, I am so satisfied with all that I completed on my very first day. Over the next few weeks I'll be keeping you all up to date with the progress of the project right up until the completion. Who knows, maybe this is something that will take and I'll find myself doing another one in the future. *note about the pictures* These were taken using my camera phone so the colours aren't 100% true to the actual thing.

Before:

Midway through the day. The sky has been painted with two coats of light blue Flat paint and I have begun "ragging" the distant trees. There will be a great deal more detail added later on.

And finally the end of Day 1. The sky is painted, the background trees have been ragged on and the baseboard is painted as well. It will be another two weeks before I get to work on this again, but hopefully Day 2 will show as much progress as today.

Where reality meets vision....

And this sadly seems to be where my latest piece of art is stuck. And I hate it. I really try to work past these little "ruts" and keep on plugging away at the piece. What was in my head for this piece looks so far from what I am currently creating it's starting to be disastrous. And yet I can't give up on it. It doesn't really appear to be anything special. Just a mermaid. No great detail, but I want to finish it.
And yet looking at it frustrates me. I've put it down and picked it up and yet can't finish it. Each brush stroke and pencil marking seems to be doing it no good.....and I'm frustrated.

Should I give up? I don't know yet, but I think I will shelve this one for a little bit. Sorry. It seems taht I can't get my hands to quite co-operate with my head. And this is where this piece will remain.

Currently I am in the middle of setting up shop in a new site known as Artfire. I will still be selling my work through Etsy, however I thought that I would test the waters with this new site. Working, working, working........and yet?

Well, I've been hard at work. In the last few weeks I have been sketching and brainstorming and just spinning ideas around in my head and yet I feel as though I am just spinning my wheels around and not getting anywhere.

I've been fortunate enough to have a new venture designing a logo for a small business and I'm very excited for it. So far this has been productive but I'm still working on the conceptual sketches. This is definitely new territory for me as I haven't done custom commercial work before and it's new. Very new and while there's a part of me that is incredibly nervous and critical of myself I am loving the challenge.

And tonight I came home to the first sale in a while of my work. I've been sitting on my work for quite some time and haven't been actively marketing it. In the true spirit of an upcoming New Year I will definitely be resolving to market my work more actively.

So much that is just on the verge of "breaking out" but yet so far.......well I will just have to give it a try and hope that it's successful and that others like my work even half as much as I hope they will.

Moonlit Reflection

Another step towards waking my long sleeping self and doing more traditional art. This piece is a watercolour at 5 x 7 inches in size. This piece is very much inspired by a previous piece that I had completed and sold months back. I loved the technique and was wondering if I could recreate it. The technique was easy though and I'm very glad that I was able to do it and hopefully it will translate to other colour schemes and ideas that I have in mind for a future project.

Playful cat....a new series

Well the other day I managed to pull out my case of coloured pencils again in an attempt at being creative. Most of my creative efforts have been of the digital variety and the traditional pieces have been a little ignored. That seems to be the way with me; I get tunnel vision with projects and while I complete a spurt with one, the others get ignored.
Well, I'm glad that I've done a bit of the more traditional paper based artwork. I find it very refreshing to sit with my pencils and some paper and see what flows out. This week it was this little kitty. Maybe it was my own new little fur friend playing near by that inspired it, but I seem to fall back on cats as a subject whenever I'm stuck. Not sure if that's a way to stay in a safe zone but I'll take it.

Now for the artwork. The first one is titled "Playful" and the second "Alley Cat". Both are created using coloured pencils on Bristol paper and are 3.5 x 2.5 inches in size. I've also listed both through my store on Etsy.

Obscure Ire

I'm on a roll....or rather I'm finally digging up past work that I never got around to posting about let alone put up for sale. This piece was created about two to three months ago, but due to my insane schedule had never posted. This piece was created while I was particularly frustrated. My life needed me to be calm and yet there I was surrounded by all this anxiety and anger from certain parts of my life. And the fairy....well that's only due to the fact that I love fairy folk. Beauty In Lisbon

I've finally done it....after a long long long dry spell I have finished my first piece in months and I'm pretty happy with it. Last weekend I have completed my first piece, a watercolour titled "Beauty In Lisbon" and it's 8 x 10 inches in size.

This piece is one of few larger pieces that I have done, however I felt it suitable for this piece. It was inspired from a picture I took while on vacation this spring in Europe. I have a thing for decorated balconies and there was quite the abundance there.

Well folks.....I'm admitting defeat. I had grand illusions of having my own store within my own site but unfortunately due to complications known as life (ha ha!!) Well, I'm one month into my second year of the site....and I'm excited with the growth I have planned! So far I'm very happy with the new look and feel of the site. To me, it's simple and reflects the work beautifully. Last year I decided to stop selling on both ebay and etsy as I was getting tired of paying fee after fee after fee. I've had to step back and evaluate where I want to take the site.

I am currently in the middle of setting up a store through the site. Right now I'm still in the starting stages researching layouts and ideas on how to present it. I'm close, very close. Keep looking and checking out the site. The new store should be launched in the next two weeks.

And as for ebay and etsy.....well I will do the occasional listing to help compliment the site. I'll be sure to keep everyone posted when this does happen. Thanks to any who do follow my work and the evolution of this site as you support is very greatly appreciated!

Logan's Meadow receives a new "look"

Tonight I finally did it. I finally relaunched the new look for my website Logan's Meadow. After a while of researching a colour scheme and layout I feel reflects me a little better than the old. After many nights of edits, re-doing the layouts and transferring code, it's done.

the only thing left to do is to launch my own shopping cart/store for the site. Ultimately I wish to be free of relying on others, just as I stated in my last posting. This major addition though will have to wait until next month due to a major lack of time until then.

Stepping forward......

The last two nights I have become very happy with myself. Well, let's not quite say happy but definitely more accomplished. The last two nights I have found myself actively revamping my website. I am done talking and I am actually doing. The first step was renewing my domain logansmeadow.com, and next will be the hosting. All will be done soon and you'll be happy to know I will definitely be sticking around for at least another year.

Not only that but I have found a design that I can work with and the site will be undergoing a MAJOR facelift and change once my hosting company finally settle moving it's servers. I've done away with a few pages and tweaked those that remain. I'll also be exploring new ideas for selling my work directly from my site and doing away with paying others to showcase my work. Don't get me wrong, I do plan on keeping my Etsy shop, but it will help direct traffic to my site directly rather than be the main storefront for my shop.

So if you take anything from this entry above all else let it be that I'm sticking around and I'm only going to get better!

Okay, I'll be the first to admit. Cats are NOT an unfamiliar subject. These folksy creations seem to be a constant with me but for good reason. Dusting off my art supplies....

....and creating! This week my husband has been really stretched at work with late late nights that have left the kids and I pretty stretched as well. Tonight instead of stressing I brought out my trusty ol' watercolour pencils, markers and acrylic paints. While the two pieces I came up with weren't anything of a real challenge to me, it was very therapeutic.

Well I have finally gotten my butt in gear and painted something! Although this is not to be considered "traditional" art, it is however still art. This piece was created digitally using my wacom pen tablet, Corel Painter 4 and Corel Paintshop Pro. It is completely drawn by hand with the exception of the bursts of reflective light and light bursts, which were created with Paintshop filters.

I am very proud of this piece. I feel that I am expanding my art even more by learning this new method of creating and I am thrilled with it!

The future of Logan's Meadow

Hello everyone.......

Well things have stopped completely regarding my art shortly around Christmas. Well that is until just last week. I have begun getting more into digital art in the form of signature tags and learning to design my own digital scrap kits (to use in signature tags). Unfortunately due to that and life I have grossly ignored my more traditional art and the site, this blog and my effort into sales has since stopped.

That truth out of the way I would like to offer my most sincere apologies. I feel as though I have not only neglected my art but any who have been following it. I never intended to ignore it as much as I have....but that is changing.

Logan's Meadow, the website will be undergoing some large changes in the next two months. The gallery will be going through some renovations and I will be eliminating the auctions page as I have no desire to list through ebay anymore due to the recent joke of an enhancement that they have announced will be made to their feedback system this coming May. I will be looking into adding my own shopping cart and I still have yet to decision wether I will continue to list through Etsy.com

So please, stay tuned and I am hoping to get this all figured out in the near future. I will be sure to post updates as soon as they are available.

Once in a while, if we're very lucky, we meet someone who is incredibly inspiring. I'm not talking about inspiring as in "that art moved me and inspired this next great piece of art". The kind of inspiring I am speaking of is the kind that makes you want to change the world.

I survived Christmas!

Christmas is now over and now all of the excitement leading up to it is over. December was a much busier month than I had anticipated. Unfortunately once again I was left with very little time to work on my art aside from the two commissions that I had completed. With the New Year brings new promises, hopes and goals. I plan on implementing each and every one of them.

Well it's been quite awhile. With the holidays approaching and a continous pileup of extra tasks at work I have been too exhausted emotionally and physically to paint. Tonight I sat down and literally forced myself to finish a piece I started weeks ago while I watched tonight's episode of House. Simple. Cute. Not challenging whatsoever, but I'm happy with it. Well I've started to embrace the fact that summer has come to an end and that autumn is now upon us. Not that I really have a choice, but rather than live in denial until the first drops of.....well, let's not go there shall we? brrrrr!

Schools in......

Well today my eldest started her first day of Junior Kindergarten so naturally my mind has been obsessed with thoughts of my daughter and school.

One of my daughter's favorite outdoor activities is hop-scotch....well as close to hopscoth as a four year old can get. In any case I started sketching and I now have in my posession on of my most favorite watercolours I have ever made. I really enjoyed creating this piece and I look forward to it's debut in my saleable collection. I'm not sure if I could sell the original but I am definitely going to research releasing a limited edition of prints.....

It is a 4 x 6 inch OSWOA created with watercolour paints on 140 lb watercolour paper, titled appropriately; "Hop To It" This piece gave me yet another opportunity to experiment using masking techniques....I love this stuff!

Well I've finally picked up my paintbrush again. I wouldn't quite say that I am at a creative block at the moment so much as I have far too many ideas to sit down and focus enough to create one really great piece so I haven't tried. The aceo group that I visit felt that a challenge was in order to help inspire the artists that visit. We've done this in the past and it has worked amazing. Well it has worked again and while I'm not feeling very Halloween-ish I do think that this is exactly what I had to do to get moving again.

And it doesn't hurt that I'm quite happy with the piece. It is titled "Enchanted Profile" and it is created in aceo format using acrylic paints on watercolour paper. I will be listing it either this weekend or early next week.

Wow, how the time flies, especially in the summer time. Today my family and I have just returned from a weeklong camping trip at Six Mile Lake in Ontario. I had the opportunity to visit many picturesque and breathtaking scenery that I am dying to sit and paint. Hopefullly I will have some new work to show you in the coming days.

Masking....hostas

Well this weekend I decided to conduct my first "experiment" in masking with watercolour paints. The painted look to the leaves of the Hosts provided the perfect opportunity. I'm very pleased with the results and may even list it. I'll be sure to post a link with this entry once I have.

Masking with watercolours can be a little tricky but I find the definition it allows the lighter colours by ensuring they are painted last is a bonus to me. You needn't worry about the darker and lighter washes overstepping their boundaries and for the most part the colour stays put.

While this one is much like the others in that it is yet another ACEO created using coloured pencils....this little fae is quite different. I love the attention to detail that I can easily provide with this medium.

I've managed to create another piece tonight and I'm happy with it. Up until now I had only created my cats using watercolour pencil and I am equeally pleased with the effect using colour pencils. I hope you enjoy it.

This weekend has marked the end of my three week dry spell. I went to a local supplies store and gave in to my inner child and bought some pencil crayons. Mind you I haven't used them since High-School, but I am extremely happy with the results. I think I'm a little addicted though, as I can't stop creating! Three pieces in just 24 hours. Although that was quite easy as they are all 2.5 inch x 3.5 inch ACEO pieces. There is just so much vividness to the colour and the best part is they can be put down and I don't have to worry about my media drying up on me as paints tend to do. Not much has been going on in the creative front regarding painting lately. However I did manage to complete my larger piece earlier this week. It's a 11" x 14" piece painted with Acrylic paints on canvas board.

I've titled this piece "Mischief". The jury is still out as to wether or not she has managed to get into the cage.

I haven't listed this piece yet but I do hope to soon. I still have to plan out the shipping method and price. Stay tuned and I'll be sure to post as soon as I have it figured out.

Update on the world of Logan's Meadow

Hello everyone!

A little update for those interested. I am currently on vacation from my full time job, and will be returning to the "working world" next week. I have been trying to keep up with my art in this time. You would think that with all this extra time at home I would have been cranking out the art. While I haven't produced an immense volume of new pieces, this extra time has afforded me the focus to start a much larger piece than I normally attempt.

With the insistance of my husband (my greatest fan), I have started my first 11 x 14 inch piece in acrylic....well my first piece I will attempt to sell. I have made great progress with the piece but I have found one downfall other than time restrictions that the larger works bring with them. I am so detail oriented that I am spending a LOT of time on that one piece. Last year at this time, I would have probably made at least half a dozen ACEO sized pieces. Well, I think in the long run, this will definitely pay off for itself. I am enjoying the larger workspace. Hopefully by the end of the week I can post a preview of the new work.

Well, tonight the obligations weren't as much so I was able to sit down and paint again. Although it is very similar to the last piece I posted I'm happy with it. The colours aren't quite as "bold" as the previous, but the I think the softer use of colours compliments it quite nicely.

It has been titled "Delicate Bamboo" and has been sold.

The creative bug hit me again today and I was able to sit down, uninterupted and paint what was in my head. Sometimes the oddest combination of objects come into my mind, but somehow they work. I am especially happy with this piece, which makes me hesitant to sell it. I have a larger piece in mind to compliment it eventually.

The title for this piece is Bamboo Butterfly and has been sold.

The creativy is flowing a little better lately. Now it's just a matter of finding the time to sit down a create. It's funny how if it isn't one thing, it's another.

The posting has been slow as has the creativity. I've been home for the last four days and I've started each day waiting for inspiration to hit. Well it finally did today. Hopefully I'll have it finished to show everyone later on tonight.

That's the thing. Inspiration tends to come and go rather quickly with me. I have to grab it when the urge hits. Rarely has a piece turned out to my satisfaction if I put it down for a day or to and return to it. It usually has to be within a day of starting it. It's an odd approach but it seems to work for me.

So I'll leave my thoughts at that. Come back a little later on and hopefully I will have something to show you :)

After a bit of a painting drought....I have come up with a new cat that I have put up for auction on eBay. I'm hoping that this little one will be enough to help ignite the creativity again.

Well, for the last year I've been thinking and thinking and plotting and thinking....

In the last weekend I have finally made up my mind and started work on what will be my website. It has been, so far, a rather bumpy road. But bumpy helps you learn and stretch your skill-set. So far I've been lucky and have had the help of some friends in overcoming these hurdles that have come up. Two pages down, three or four to go........

Today while my son was napping and my daughter was playing with her vsmile, I got the chance to paint...

For a long time I have pretty much not bothered with landscapes. However, my trip on Mother's Day to the McMichael art gallery and some encouragement from my friends awokened a love for it. I think this phase will last a good while yet.
